I was in the garden most of the day, sawing up firewood and storing it for the winter. I was followed around by my friend the robin (rødstrupe) and he even sang to me at 1m distance! When I first moved here robins were shy forest birds, but they have become less and less shy over the years as is the case further south in Europe! In this short film, he catches a worm as he’s following me! I guess this weak song is a love song rather than a “you’re a rival, keep out of my territory” song ;)

Robin is back
Not my son Robin, but Erithacus rubecula returned this week. European robins (rødstrupe) are now classified with the flycatchers. A joy to hear their bittersweet song!
Spring song
I also heard singing siskin, great tit, blue tit, greenfinch and coal tit today!
Robin and redpoll on the bird feeder and eagles on Malvikodden

Both of these thrushes, European robin (rødstrupe) and blackbird (svarttrost) overwinter in small numbers, mainly in the lowlands here.

Goldfinches
Bird paradise!
It’s about as like winter England as it gets here this morning, grey and drizzling….so nice to have a flock of 17 goldfinches (stillits) brightening up the day and lots of other birds too!
Hawfinch (kjernebiter)
Robin (rødstrupe) with brambling (bjørkefink)
There was also a flock of 100 waxwings feeding in the garden, nuthatches and a treecreeper…Malvik is bird paradise at this time of year!
Autumn bird song gives hope
I’m full of hope!
The autumn songs of the European robin (rødstrupe), heard in the video from the garden this morning and wren (gjerdesmett) always puts me in a good frame of mind despite everything
It’s still very mild here and still no proper frost (just a slight ground frost one morning) and no frost forecast either in the next 10 days! Just as well as I’ve hardly started harvesting and preparing for winter! On my bike ride to town yesterday I heard 4 singing robins, and in Bakklandet (central Trondheim) a singing wren on my way into town and with the full moon accompanying me on the way home, all the signs are good!
