I moved a skirret/sukkerrot (meaning sugar root) root into the cellar, planning to eat them….they went missing until I noticed the characteristic edible blanched shoots this morning! The roots had been like this exposed to the air all winter (I’ve previously lost roots when overwintered in a bucket in soil (they don’t like it damp it seems). See my book Around the World in 80 plants for more… :)
Despite the cool weather, the leaf shoots (taranome) of the small tree Aralia elata (taranoki) are emerging…but I can’t reach them any more….I should cut it down so that young shoots come from the base. These shoots are a common sight in supermarkets in Japan. More in my book Around the World in 80 plants :)
35 perennials mostly from the garden this evening made into a pesto and served with Japanese green pasta that was purchased in a wasabi shop…it didn’t taste of wasabi…
It doesn’t get greener than this ;)
Two pictures of Fuki (Petasites japonicus) taken this morning, one of the delicious wild vegetables I ate in Japan (pictured prepared flower bud tempura, fukinoto) :)
Woke up to this view at 5 am….still a shock to see new snow at the end of April, but not unusual…this weekend’s plans to sow and plant in the garden may have to wait until my return from my forthcoming trip to Southern Norway, Sweden and Denmark or maybe I should just abandon annuals altogether…
