Woke up this morning to a beautiful sight of deep snow on the balcony and mother of pearl clouds (perlemorskyer) in the sky. Added to the garden full of birds all day (still over 200 waxwings / sidensvans), a white-tailed eagle soaring over the bay and herons (gråhegre) flying past, it doesn’t get much better. I even enjoyed the hour shoveling snow!
Apparently there hasn’t been so much snow in Trondheim for 93 years so early in December (much less snow here than higher up though).
However, the forecast tomorrow is +8C and 30mm of rain…with the soil below frozen, this could become quite a mess!
White-tailed eagle (havørn) in flight past Malvikodden
Note that you can see Trondheim (Værnes) airport in the background…this is where eagles were flown out and over to the UK and Ireland as part of the reintroduction program…
You can also hear singing siskin (grønnsisik) in the background.
This time, a treecreeper (trekryper) on the bird feeder looking for tidbits, bird diversity under the feeder, my resident pair of great spotted woodpeckers (flaggspett) and the last video taken from my home office shows a white-tailed eagle flying across the bay and landing in a tree on Malvikodden (I hadn’t noticed when I was filming that there was a second bird in that tree and the first bird looks like he lands on her back and flaps his wings….more than that I can’t see…. ;) Eagles start the breeding season early!
I’ve seen White-tailed Eagles (havørn) passing the house and down in the bay 3 times today! The second video below is taken from my desk, in slow motion :)
A white-tailed eagle (havørn) joined me eating breakfast this morning, sitting on the rocky shore on Malvikodden on the opposite side of the bay with what looked like a fairly large fish, surrounded by hooded crows (kråke) waiting for a few titbits..
Malvik is on the north edge of a large low pressure system over the UK giving southern Norway a lot of snow and strong easterly winds here, the house creaking as we speak! Much warmer today at -8C, but bitterly cold because of the wind chill. My garden is quite exposed and the small birds disappear to more sheltered spots on days like today. Rushed out to get these pictures of a White-tailed Eagle / Havørn, you can get an impression of its size against the Hooded Crow / Kråke
