I was blown away by Kerstin Lye’s garden in the Hurdal Ecovillage….a great example of a naturalistic polycultural mix of perennials and annuals and a great inspiration for the other ecovillagers….Kerstin has clearly worked very hard from the start in developing her garden! Thanks for showing me around!

Advances in Edimental Salads
Pinenut crackers
Great excitement yesterday morning (11th July 2017) to hear the familiar call of nutcrackers in the garden of the rectory where I’m staying here in Hurdal! Excited to see cones falling from the tree (cut off by a nutcracker), and lots of empty cones on the ground! More information with the pictures!
Having salad fun in Hurdal
Hurray for the Hurdal salad, complete with borallium antenna and Hurdal’s Rose!
Berit Børte about to attempt to communicate with the salad through the borallium antenna, but the boral connector had fallen off :(
Margaret M. Meg Anderson up to no good!

Ancient Weeding Technique Revisited
Tarua
Many years ago, I visited a Polynesian market in New Zealand and bought some tubers that were called Tarua in the South Pacific Islands…similar but different (and larger) to the more common Taro (Colocasia esculenta). For a plant that supposedly originated from tropical lowland Malaysia, Taro is a surprisingly cold hardy plant making a nice edimental house plant that can be outside in the summer even in my cool climate! I took a Tarua tuber home and grew it as a house plant for some years. It is probably Xanthosoma sagittifolium, also known as Elephant Ears, and closely related to Taro and similarly quite hardy! See the pictures below.

Leopard slugs out in strength
My first line of defence against the feared Portuguese slug (Iberiaskogsnegl / brunsnegl) seems to be holding despite a couple of sitings in the garden. Last night I noticed that there were hundreds of leopard slugs (boaskogsnegl / leopardsnegl) gathering to discuss strategy! Only when trapped and starving have I noticed them damaging any of my edibles…
