{"id":8819,"date":"2016-12-04T17:21:33","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T16:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/?p=8819"},"modified":"2016-12-05T10:57:21","modified_gmt":"2016-12-05T09:57:21","slug":"greater-pignut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/?p=8819","title":{"rendered":"Greater pignut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greater pignut or earth chestnut (<em>Bunium bulbocastanum<\/em>) is an interesting perennial hardy root vegetable in the carrot family (<em>Apiaceae<\/em>) that I had in my garden for 10-15 years. The seeds didn&#8217;t often mature, so it didn&#8217;t spread at all (unlike common pignut, <em>Conopodium majus<\/em>). \u00a0It is like a outsized pignut in appearance. \u00a0However, \u00a0I can&#8217;t eat either of these raw as\u00a0I get\u00a0a burning aftertaste at the back of my \u00a0throat after a while, after an\u00a0initial mild nutty flavour&#8230;.and yield needs to be improved dramatically before it will be widely grown..<br \/>\nOften greater pignut received as seed is actually <em>Oenanthe pimpinelloides<\/em> which also is reported to have\u00a0edible tubers (plants received as <em>O. pimpinelloides<\/em> have never survived the winter here).
