Yesterday I made this video of a flock of waxwings:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 790px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-24040-1\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxwing_flight.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxwing_flight.mp4\">http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxwing_flight.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>I stopped the film and took the following screen grab and noticed that a couple of the birds were in gliding flight, looking like bullets:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24042\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight-300x226.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight-768x579.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I took another screen grab one second on and to my astonishment almost all the birds had synchronised into gliding flight:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24041\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight2.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight2-300x178.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Waxw_flight2-768x455.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apparently, this synchronisation of waxwing flocks is well known ( similar to starlings).
