{"id":22923,"date":"2019-07-25T08:38:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T06:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/?p=22923"},"modified":"2019-07-25T08:38:18","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T06:38:18","slug":"oh-no-sorry-greenbrier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/?p=22923","title":{"rendered":"Oh no, sorry greenbrier&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer I discovered a climber in a hedge in the garden.\u00a0 It turned out to probably be\u00a0\u00a0<i>Smilax lasioneura<\/i>, the\u00a0Blue Ridge carrionflower, a species closely related to<i>\u00a0Smilax herbacea<\/i>, which has edible shoots used like asparagus. I have no record or recollection of planting it here, but I have a record of being offered 3 seeds of <em>Smilax herbacea <\/em>by Samuel Thayer 10 years ago, so I can only assume it was one of these that germinated.<br \/>\nYesterday, I was scything an area of the garden and, forgetting the <em>Smilax<\/em>,\u00a0 I managed to cut right through the stem at the base and it was just coming into flower too, although, being dioecious, there wouldn&#8217;t have been any berries.
