Another album from my visit to Iceland in September 2015. \u00a0Just a short drive from\u00a0Sk\u00e1lholt\u00a0(http:\/\/www.edimentals.com\/blog\/?page_id=2727<\/a>), we arrived at one of the best known experimental farms in Iceland.\u00a0Before we arrived, my guide Au\u00f0ur Ingibj\u00f6rg Ottesen told me that the guy we were to visit was an old hippy and good friend and we would get on just fine!<\/p>\n

Ingolfur Gudnason\u00a0 and \u00a0Sigr\u00fan Elfa Reynisd\u00f3ttir\u00a0farm at Engi which is in Laugar\u00e1s in Biskupstungur, just down the road from our last stop at Sk\u00e1lholt and about 100 km from Reykjav\u00edk. Engi is farmed organically. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are grown there in addition to herbs in warm and cold greenhouses all year round.\u00a0(Engi has a nice web site here with location map: \u00a0http:\/\/www.engi.is\/#<\/a> ). There is also an outdoors herb garden an aMAZing maze\u00a0 http:\/\/www.engi.is\/#\/velundargardurinn\/4552215689<\/a><\/p>\n

Engi was previously moorland (the house is right next to moorland still) and Ing\u00f3lfur and Sigr\u00fan reclaimed the land themselves. I soon realized that I had met Ing\u00f3lfur before, first at the Plants that tell stories seminar in Hiller\u00f8d, Denmark in November 2008 where I\u2019m pretty sure he told me about the only location of Allium oleraceum in Iceland (see the story of how this plant probably arrived in Iceland from near where I live in my book!). We also met at the \u00a0Nordic Potato Meeting in \u00c5s in October 2012.<\/p>\n

Au\u00f0ur Ingibj\u00f6rg Ottesen, Hildur Arna Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir , Sigr\u00fan Elfa Reynisd\u00f3ttir and Ingolfur Gudnason<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ing\u00f3lfur and Sigr\u00fan are real innovators in Iceland, testing many new and exotic varieties. In 2010,\u00a0Ing\u00f3lfur and Sigr\u00fan were awarded the Horticultural Society of Iceland Incentive Award. Ing\u00f3lfur is particularly knowledgeable about the use of herbs and plants and the gardening history of Iceland. He oversaw the establishment of the herb garden in Sk\u00e1lholt (which we had just visited) in 2004. He has held many courses on cultivation and gardening history and is on the committee of the Nordic Gene Bank, representing Icelandic commercial plants:<\/p>\n
