Hazy this morning as warmer less clean air from the south moved in today..
The Edible Garden Land Centre Opening
During KVANN’s (Norwegian Seed Savers) annual meeting weekend in Trondheim we had an official opening ceremony for my garden, The Edible Garden (Den Spiselige Hagen), as a Permaculture LAND Centre, the 3rd in Norway. The official opening was fun and can be seen in the second video. Owner of Norway’s first LAND centre, Eirik Lillebøe Wiken performs the official opening from ca. 18.00 in the second video!
The videos are mostly in Norwegian!

Pumpkin spider / Korsedderkopp
Araneus diadematus is commonly called the European garden spider or sometimes the pumpkin spider (korsedderkopp). I presume this is the male carefully approaching the female without being eaten for dinner!
Did you know they eat the web and contents every night spinning a new one each day!
….and when you wake up in the morning and a spider has been busy at work all night with its web attached to the bed, the ceiling and a pile of clothes on the floor! Such is being closely connected with nature…
Wood mouse
It’s not often I can film a mouse in the garden.
A very young wood mouse (småskogmus)
The Ladies 15, Admirals 2
Painted Lady (tistelsommerfugl) numbers have gradually increased over the last few days and I counted 15 today with two Red Admirals. A week ago the situation was reversed with 15 Admirals and 2 Ladies!
Bilberries
In the local paper was a report that it was a bad year for bilberries (blåbær) locally. I’m glad we didn’t listen and went anyway as it was pretty good as you can see with several kilos to dry and make bilberry leather with:
Painted Ladies vs Red Admirals
Yesterday there were 15 Red Admiral butterflies in the garden and 2 Painted Ladies, today the Ladies beat the Admirals 8-6 :)
That Chantarelle Moment
That special moment each year when you see the first large group of chantarelles in the woods!
Used in a delicious green wholegrain spelt pasta sauce with Malva moschata (musk mallow), Rumex acetosa (sorrel), shallots, garlic, perennial rocket etc. and a strong organic cheese!
Invading Admirals
There were at least 15 Red Admiral butterflies in the garden yesterday, mainly on Buddleja!
Pizza Hemerocallis
Tonight’s pizza ingredients found on a random forage in the garden: 3 different day lily species flower buds, including the first yellow Hemerocallis altissima, H. citrina (in the middle) with Malva moschata and M. alcea, second flush nettles, Campanula trachelium (new leaves after cutting down), Sonchus oleraceus (common sow thistle) and broad beans, with shallots, garlic, chili, oregano and topped with the year’s first poppy seed!
