Edible rooted chicory

Posted on Facebook on 4th December 2011: “I harvested my root chicory today (Di Sancino) and was pleased with the yield – very long uniform white roots. Only slightly bitter I’m sure I’ll be growing more of these in future. Chicories are easy to grow compared to other roots in that there are no pests that attack them and can therefore be grown organically without any protection!”

Visiting the Koster Islands

Really looking forward to visiting the beautiful tranquil Koster Islands again at the end of April and Helena von Bothmer‘s permaculture centre and gardens there.  See the following FB event:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1567806430183747

Here are a few pictures from my last trip two years ago, just for a visit…

Forced ostrich wings…

The Norwegian name for ostrich fern is strutseving (ostrich wing) and fiddleheads are now appearing in my kitchen window, two months before they will be out in the garden. It’s easy to dig up some roots of this spreading species in the autumn. I left them outside in these pots until about a month ago. I’m leaving these first relatively small fiddleheads to grow, so as not to kill the roots (they will be planted back in the garden to recover). P1520721 P1520719
